Venue Spotlight: Hotel Se, San Diego, Ca

Downtown San Diego has been enjoying quite the boom!  The Ivy Hotel opened in 2007 as THE chic & luxe hotel in the Gaslamp.  It was shortly followed by the Hard Rock Hotel and let’s not forget the newly renovated W hotel.  But now we have another treat to add to the mix…Se San Diego.

Designed to be an oasis amongst the buzzing downtown, walking into Se is like walking into another world.  The attention to detail in the lobby alone is incredible…stingray skins cover the concierge and reception desks…but the staff will immediately inform you that no stingrays were harmed in the process.  The skins come from a preserve and were gathered after the natural shedding process…how’s that for chic and eco-friendly!

A custom designed lighting sculpture hangs in the lobby and is more akin to a mobile than anything else.

And that’s another thing!  Installation pieces abound throughout the hotel.  The staircase wall is lined with a fin-like installation, the restaurant (Suite & Tender) has black wood panels with etchings of different words and phrases (some naughty and some nice), and the spa reception desk has an awesome backdrop of miniature teacup-like sculptures in the loveliest shade of foam green.  Its worth the visit just to see the art in the joint!

And the guest rooms….dark hardwood floors.  I was sold on that alone!

The hotel bar is cool, dark and sexy…perfect for an evening drink.

No expense was spared in the design of this property.  Boasting mainly an Asian-inspired theme, Se actually fuses together inspiration from every conceivable point in the world but in the most fluid aesthetic imaginable.  Incredibly tactile, you want to feel everything you see, but the sensory experience does not stop there.  The quirkiest part of the hotel are the elevators…white acrylic walls with embedded crosscuts of wood pieces that emanate the most subtly sweet aroma.  Again…the attention to detail is beyond anything I could have imagined.

And let’s not forget the ballroom.  Located on the 4th floor (someone correct me if that’s wrong), the east wall of the ballroom is filled with windows from floor to ceiling, and the ceiling has a sculptured element with wood panels overlapping each other.  I love the modern feel of the whole space!

As you can see, I like the place.  So next time your downtown and find yourself near the House of Blues cruise into the bar of their new neighbor…Se San Diego.

Scenes From… A Holiday Party at the Grand del Mar

At the beginning of December we did the Annual Dinner for a San Diego organization.  The event was held on a Friday night at the Grand del Mar, and was a huge success!  We started with cocktails & christmas carolers in the North Foyer and a special reception in the South Foyer for the sponsors.  Dinner for about 300 people was in the Elizabeth Ballroom and with a full audio/visual production:  screens on both sides of the room, cameras, spotlights, presentation of sponsors, along with videos produced especially for this event.  We were fortunate to have a fantastic team from the staff at the Grand del Mar as well as the A/V crew from M5 Productions.  We closed out the evening with an after-party on the North Foyer & Patio where we have a Jazz Band and Cigar Bar with a Cigar Roller.  It really was a great event!

Scenes From…A December Wedding at the Prado

These photos were taken by my fantastic assistant Briana.  We worked on an afternoon wedding in December at the Prado in Balboa Park.  Here’s a glimpse of the beautiful ceremony site there!

The reception was held in the Prado’s Ballroom.  I’ll post more as soon as I get them!  For more details on having a wedding at the Prado visit their website:

ABC Holiday Party at the Prado - Balboa Park

This past Tuesday was the Association of Bridal Consultant’s Annual Holiday Party at the Prado in Balboa Park.  There were all kinds of yummy treats on hand!  For the cocktail hour there was tray passed champagne, a gourmet coffee bar with espressos and lattes by Joes on the Nose, mini pastries, mini donuts by Party Donuts and chocolate dipped fruits by Edible Arrangements.

Photo Montage from the ABC Holiday Party Lunch was provided by the Prado with a Mashed Potato Bar (a personal favorite of mine!) and buffet of green beans with pancetta, orecchiette pasta with pancetta and a cream sauce, pumpkin raviolis and a sushi station by Sushi on a Roll!

Floral arrangements were provided by Hartworks Floral, Lois Mathews Design and Rae Florae.

The very lovely menu cards were done by Posh Paperie (they were really beautiful!).  The list of vendors goes on, but these were the highlights of the day!

As a San Diego wedding planner, it is always fantastic to see the work of so many wonderful local vendors and the ABC certainly gives me an opportunity to see them showcase their work.  San Diego style weddings certainly have a distinct vibe and these vendors never forget that!  Kudos to everyone that participated!
